Laffort is a fourth-generation family-owned winemaking product supplier, based in Bordeaux, France since 1895, and distributed in over 60 countries worldwide. With a history in enology dating back to Pasteur’s seminal works, the Laffort group is proud to dedicate one of the largest budgets in the wine industry to Research and Development. Because of these efforts, the company holds many patents and regularly launches innovative winemaking products for the wine industry.   Laffort holds HACCP and ISO certifications.

Founded in 2010, Laffort USA is based in Petaluma, CA and has been growing rapidly since inception, serving the entire North American wine industry. Laffort USA was the first winemaking product supplier in the U.S. to achieve Green Business Certification.  In 2019 Laffort USA will move to a new facility constructed specifically for the company in Windsor, CA. 

Description:  

Qualified in winemaking and/or related sciences, the Technical Manager is the Technical face of the Laffort brand in North America. The Technical Manager presents the depth of knowledge and research of Laffort globally, as well as the support for the North American wine industry Laffort offers through its deep scientific knowledge of Enology.

The Technical Manager will be competent in:

  • Understanding the complete range of winemaking processes and impacts of winemaking decisions on chemical and microbial aspects of wine.
  • Working in harmony with Laffort USA staff and North American distributors to support sales from a technical aspect. 
  • Organizing time and working according to the needs and demands of the markets. 
  • Focusing on customer and sales support from a technical angle, using all fields of expertise to provide necessary information and marketing tools to support sales. 
  • Communicating with all levels of Laffort management, including international Laffort Technical Managers and Biolaffort, the wholly owned subsidiary of Laffort which provides Research and Development for all other Laffort subsidiaries.

APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT AREA (50%)

Initiate, Develop, Maintain and produce results for ‘ARC by Laffort’ (Laffort Applied Research Cooperative)

  • Develop and manage 5-member steering committee.
  • Recruit and develop membership of approximately 30 winemakers.
  • Host and moderate annual membership meeting(s). 
  • Develop and validate all trials with membership.
  • Write all experimental methodologies.
  • Periodically visit all member facilities to ensure experimental performance.
  • Develop and initiate all communication channels to release results to winemaking public, including, but not limited to, the ARC website, publishing in industry journals, and presenting at seminars. 

Other

  • Develop local experiments in wineries for developing commercial products in collaboration with other Laffort subsidiaries and Biolaffort.

TECHNICAL AREA (30%)

  • Educate and develop sales staff regarding the Laffort products on usage, technical aspects, and market positioning. 
  • Report technical innovations of the North American industry to Laffort USA and Biolaffort. 
  • Follow technical innovations of competitors and report these to Laffort USA and Biolaffort.
  • Inform Laffort USA and Biolaffort about any critical situation, trends, and opportunities.
  • Develop relationships with U.S. and Canadian universities and technical institutions.
  • Represent Laffort interests in relevant Institutions, e.g. American Viticulture Foundation, American Society of Enology and Viticulture.
  • Participate in the development of relevant selling points for Laffort products.
  • Represent Laffort position at the FDA/TTB.
  • Inform Laffort about any product-related legal issues.

SALES AND MARKETING AREA(20%)

  • Develop and host webinars, write newsletters.
  • Write and publish articles in wine industry professional journals.
  • Organize (jointly with Laffort Technical Representatives) technical meetings with major groups to introduce and develop implementation of the Laffort range.
  • Present Laffort USA knowledge at industry seminars and trade shows
  • Assist with translation of technical and commercial documentation.

Direct Manager:  Laffort USA General Manager.

Education and Experience:  

  • Qualified in winemaking or related sciences, minimum M.S. in Enology, Microbiology or Chemistry (PhD preferred but not essential) and/or substantial (10+ years) existing experience in the wine industry.
