The Client

In spring of 1996, Bill & Carol Foley purchased 1,000 acres of lush and fertile earth within the then relatively unknown Sta. Rita Hills region of Santa Barbara County. Their plan – produce hand-crafted Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that reflected the best of California’s Central Coast. Named for their two daughters – Lindsey & Courtney – Lincourt Vineyards was born, and with it, the beginning of Foley Family Wines.

In the 25 years since, Foley Family Wines has grown into one of the world’s largest producers of fine wine, adding some of the industry’s most valuable wineries, located in the most recognized winemaking regions, including Napa, Sonoma, the Pacific Northwest, and New Zealand. Today, the Foley Family Wines portfolio boasts a number of the most-celebrated names in wine, including Chalk Hill Estate, Chalone, Ferrari-Carano, and Sebastiani.

The Role:

The Safety Director is responsible for scheduling required safety training, conducting, and coordinating training and safety inspections, and the tracking of corrective actions. This position will be responsible for compliance with all safety record keeping, following procedures and standards as outlined in the company Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), and compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulatory agencies. Bi-lingual English/Spanish required. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills; English and Spanish.

Reporting Structure: This role reports to the VP of Winemaking

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct reports, but is expected to provide leadership, manage company culture to support the team, including coach, guide, develop the right people, and drive company focus of “safety first”.

Location: Will be visiting different locations/Vineyards.

Main office will be 3700 Pine Flat Rd, Healdsburg CA 95448

Essential Duties:

  • Manage the crew leaders’, foremen, and Supervisors’ daily/monthly/quarterly/ and annual Safety documents. Compile, store, review, sign off (must ensure that the forms are filled out correctly, timely, etc.) and retrieve safety data.
  • Works with HR Manager to improve experience mod rate and maintain safety standards and improvement processes.
  • Report safety training effectiveness and updates and any relevant training concerns to HR Manager.
  • Acts as resource for OSHA safety rules and regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times and act as the lead contact for all safety matters.
  • Provides and posts information, signs, posters barriers or other materials to warn of potential safety hazards and to prevent access to hazardous conditions.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections at worksites. Supervise and train safety inspectors to do the same.
  • Conduct and/or facilitate Safety Trainings and audits and maintain records to support and demonstrate program compliance.
  • Maintain Safety Training records and manuals
  • Work with HR Manager to ensure OSHA compliance and records.
  • Conduct regular equipment inspections (fire extinguishers, eye wash stations (stationary and mobile). Schedule annual maintenance and training and other periodical training.
  • Respond to and ensure proper procedures are followed for worksite injuries.
  • Work with leaders on key safety requirements that meet or exceed regulatory requirements.
  • Translate training material from English to Spanish as needed.
  • Develop safety training packets for employees, including contractors/vendors.
  • Work with HR Manager to develop appropriate light duty options to foster a "return to work" attitude for workers' compensation and other medical leaves.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Knowledge Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of vineyard management practices in day-to-day operations
  • Knowledge of farming equipment
  • Knowledge of viticulture, including use of pesticides and other farming chemicals and use
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish required. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills; English and Spanish. Ability to present materials to individuals and groups of people– harvest crews, shop crews, etc.
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and complex files
  • Ability to work alone; focused to complete assigned duties on a daily basis
  • Detail oriented. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to analyze situations, make independent decisions, prioritize to meet deadlines, work under pressure, and be a team player.
  • High level of objectivity, tact, and diplomacy to establish and maintain an effective on-going relationship between management, and employees.
  • Ability to work safely

Education, Minimum Training, and Experience:

  • Knowledge of workers’ compensation insurance; including strong understanding of experience modification, claims management, and the paperwork required to apply for and modify workers compensation benefits.
  • Strong understanding of key performance measures for workers’ compensation insurance carrier and how safety impacts financial performance.
  • Knowledge of wage and hour laws and regulations preferred
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The work environment is cold, muddy, windy, hail, foggy, or rainy in winter, hot and very sunny during the summer. Temperatures may average 65-80ºF in office areas, and temperatures outside may range from 25ºF-110ºF.
  • On ranches, the employee will occasionally experience exposure to airborne agents like dusts, spores, pollens, insects, smells etc.
