VP of Winemaking - O'Neill Vintners & Distillers

SUMMARY:

O’Neill Vintners & Distillers, the largest B Corp Certified winery in North America and one of the fastest growing wineries in California, is searching for a dynamic, results-driven, innovative, and experienced winemaker to lead and develop talented individuals in the Winemaking and Grower Relations teams.  He/She will be responsible for managing the end-to-end production process expected to always deliver exceptional quality wines across the Consumer Goods wine brands and Business-to-Business programs.  This role will also require a commitment to the company’s sustainability practices, relentless dedication to continuous improvement, innovation, and LEAN production processes.   The VP of Winemaking is expected to develop strong partnerships with Sales, Marketing and Finance leaders to unlock growth opportunities and ensure sustainable business results.  He/She will be a key player in the Senior Leadership Team in collaboration other leaders to drive overall company’s goals through deliverables and action plans.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Hire, lead, mentor and inspire Winemaking and Grower Relations teams, and provide ongoing training, mentorship, and development plans 
  • Oversee Winemaking operations across all production facilities 
  • Provide direction and goals to Grower Relations Team prioritizing grape deliveries and to evaluate and optimize fruit quality
  • Lead the development and execution of the Winemaking production plan ensuring consistency in quality across all wine varietals and styles while driving efficiencies in the process where possible.  
  • Responsible for leading and providing clear direction for successful and efficient Grape-to-Bottle process.
  • Oversee Harvest season activities ensuring safety of all employees and optimize crush output
  • Lead and execute the annual Crush Plan in collaboration with other production leaders and available resources to align departmental priorities and deliver company goals
  • Accountable for acting as a strong partner with Cellar Operations Team to ensure safe, efficient, correct execution of all work orders and directives
  • Partner with Demand Planning and Finance teams to proactively manage supply/demand fluctuations to help meet product volume goals and timelines
  • Works with Finance, Business-to-Business (B2B) Sales and Commercial Team to allocate wine to various B2B and bottling programs and plan for long-term inventory
  • Provide clear expectations and direction for winemaking and wine blending to satisfy B2B and bottling programs according to volume, financial metrics, and style specifications
  • Develop Monthly/Quarterly critical processing metrics to ensure operations teams are meeting company goals.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Innovation & NPD Team in identifying new market opportunities and proactively manage the commercialization process to ensure quality and on-time market launches on new items 
  • Work collaboratively with sales partners, to build and maintain strong customer relationships.  This will require frequent meetings with customers at winery or elsewhere to conduct wine tastings and help with education and storytelling on wines. 
  • Create plans for new equipment and infrastructure for both grower relations and wine production teams
  • Be an active and effective spokesperson for the company with media, distributors, and retail partners 
  • Responsible for all budgeting, planning, and forecasting.  
  • Fosters and develops positive company culture.  

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Viticulture and Enology, Food Science, Fermentation Science, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or related.  Master’s Degree a plus
  • 10+ years of winemaking and grower relations experience, preferably in a large volume winemaking facility- both inside and outside of California
  • Team leadership experience. 
  • Proven palate with the ability to evaluate wines with confidence and clarity.
  • Strong and effective communication and presentation skills 
  • Strong organizational, innovative, and problem-solving and analytical skills.  
  • Ability to work within a dynamic organization with changing priorities and workflow.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.  
  • Prior budgeting and P&L management experience.
